Golf and the Ozone Layer Hole

Updated: May 2, 2020

A good news is circulating all over the media this morning that the largest hole in the ozone layer ever formed has healed itself. Environment experts claim that reduction in emissions caused by the recent lockdown had nothing to do with it. Some of the scientists are even predicting that this phenomenon will occur annually. We will see formation of the hole and it’s self-closure again and again.

The news of such a recurring miracle that I call putting in skies takes my mind to the hole on the greens. So many balls have gone towards this hole, a few drop inside, some miss by inches, and more avidly avoid it. Making it to this hole is the ultimate goal of golfers on the move and their concentration occasionally defeats the precision and reach of the Hubble space telescope.

Putting is a unique experience of geography, geology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, physiology, and social art. Understanding the green requires mastery in all these subjects. If life is a fairway, green is the day of judgement. Ironically, those who claim the utmost craftsmanship in golf often miss the simplest putts.

Putting basically begins from an approach shot. The shot must make a particular landing on prefered drop zone at the green. Trust me, it is easier said than done. Putting is a binary experiment that makes you read grain and slope, prescribed grip of the putter; taking a peculiar posture to sternly touch the putter’s square head at a very pertinent point of the ball to lead it to an envisioned line and length. Just imagine the amount of precision in a single act.

Like all roads lead to Rome, all golf shots are prerequisites to putting. Every holes like the ozone hole would not repair itself. We have to work very hard to fill most holes in our lives. A hole either on the green, or in a relationship won't self heal. The present pandemic has dug new holes in many spheres of our lives. It is our turn now to follow the zeal of healthcare workers to contribute in different walks of life.

Golf on to the perfect putt of game & life. True love is the putt in life.
