I swear,
after seeing your face
the whole world is
fraud and fantasy
Rumi
“Once I have seen your ocean blue eyes, I can not see elsewhere. Ever since I held you in my arms, I cannot hold anything other than you.”, exclaims a mother holding her infant in her lap. The father steps in the room and looks at both of them adorably, undecided who he loves more, baby or mother. He knows he can’t stay away from both of them for long.
This is the story of another young family in another town. They are ecstatic on the arrival of their newborn and they have been through much to get to this cherishable point.
A moon teaches gradualness
and deliberation and how one gives birth
to oneself slowly. Patience with small details
makes perfect a large work, like the universe.
What nine months of attention does for an embryo
forty early mornings will do for your gradually growing wholeness.
Rumi
Though pain is something all of us avoid, there is one pain we wait for. In fact, we welcome and celebrate it. This is the pain of contractions. An epidural may provide some ease but there is no escape. The task to get through pregnancy and delivery is strenuous and backbreaking. It is a matter of much more than pain. It demands patience, tolerance, a big heart, and a strong mind. It requires an abundance of time and sacrifice.
After all, nothing valuable comes easily. They say the process of delivery itself is a new birth for the mother, as well.
One look at the newborn’s face makes any amount of pain worth it. What a mystery nature unfolds and how it buds into an adult. A newborn is an answer to a mother’s prayers and pregnancy is an announcement of that benediction. Just imagine the immensity of the creator’s imagination and inventiveness of the process of birth. It begins with a look and a kiss and ends up in a womb and a cradle. The relationship of tenderness, fondness, loveness, and sweetness breeds a new world of uniqueness. It is a common phenomenon that parents imprint the baby’s mind with their own beliefs but remember, a baby brings many changes in their parent’s life as well. Yes, babies keep them under their thumb and enslave them with the rope of their innocence and fragility. It is two-way binding; an unwritten contract full of conditions and concessions. The world has to make space for the incomers. They need their room, bed, kitchen and silverware, clothing, washings, and wrappings. And though they seem like a blank slate, they know how to get all of it.
Their cry can pierce a heart of stone and fiber. Their scream can shake castles and forts. Their looks can open any kernel and their smiles can touch cardiac cores. They know how to melt a cold heart and how to induce you to love. All grown-ups have a hidden baby inside them, and infants can ignite it convincingly. In order to get rid of all your anxiety and depression, I would recommend you spend time with a newborn. It may make your life miserable at times but you would not think of any of your worries.
These fragile babies grow up to be leaders, statesmen, philosophers, scientists, astronauts, composers, singers, actors, and great business tycoons. Some of them single-handedly change the outlook of the entire humanity. Who can predict that a tenuous little fellow in a baby cart would grow up to be able to achieve wonders in the course of a few more years?
The first glance from the eyes of the beloved is like the spirit that moved upon the face of the waters, giving birth to heaven and earth.
Khalil Gibran
